Abstract: |
The study, of desk-based assessment type, was designed to provide a broad-brush strategic assessment of the possible archaeological implications of development in the Thames Gateway. South of the Thames the area stretched from Deptford Creek in the west to Sittingbourne and Sheppey in the east. On the north bank of the Thames the study area extended from the River Lea in the west to Stanford-le-Hope in the east. The intention was to identify areas and circumstances where the sensitivity of the archaeological resource warranted the application of PPG16 type policies; and where localised strategic study would be justified, because the potential pressures of development were high, and there was insufficient detail in the archaeological record.
