Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at a development site where a previous evaluation had revealed pits containing animal bones. Medieval horse burials had been recorded at a nearby site. During the excavation, further medieval pits were revealed, bringing the total to 184; 19 contained dismembered horses and 3 contained dogs. Acidic soil may have destroyed bones in the remaining pits. A probable 16th-17th century sandpit, post-medieval dump layers and a brick wall were also recorded. Medieval and post-medieval pottery and a fragment of Roman brick were recovered. [AIP] |
