Abstract: |
A documentary assessment of Catterick Bridge indicated that it had been repaired and altered on several occasions since its construction in the 15th century. Despite this rebuilding the test pits excavated to evaluate the bridge structure indicated that the central arches and a length of the eastern face of the original bridge survived, as did parts of a later chapel of St. Anne. Evidence of the substantial 16th century rebuilding of the arches and piers, and remnants of contemporary and later road surfaces were recorded. The structure of Carr's widening of the bridge of 1792 was examined and the foundations of the military railway that crossed the bridge early this century identified. All such archaeological features above the bridge structure were to be removed during the course of the proposed strengthening works, it was accepted that these should accordingly be recorded, and the results interpreted as part of a comprehensive study of the bridge structure.
