Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment of the proposed site of a drainage connection at a church was undertaken. Previous test pits at the site had revealed lead coffins and bones, re-interred from the churchyard during a road-widening scheme in 1895, as well as Roman pottery and a series of metalled surfaces. Early medieval buildings, pits and burials had been excavated to the west. A church lay on the site by the 11th century or earlier, although it was demolished in 1548, and was rebuilt in the early 18th century. It was concluded that a watching brief should be carried out.
