Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during excavations inside the church. The present church was on the site of a medieval church, which probably dated to the Anglo-Saxon period. A medieval tiled floor, some tiles with traces of yellow glaze, set into a bed of mortar were revealed. In the south-western part of the south aisle two ex-situ 18th century gravestones, both of members of the Mallory family, were uncovered, laid over a brick-built vault containing three lead coffins, one with traces of the wooden outer coffin with double copper-alloy studded decoration and a fabric cover. The crown of the vault was considerably higher than the level of the medieval floor, suggesting that vault belonged to the period after the church was rebuilt, and the style of coffins tended to confirm this.
