Abstract: |
Trial trenching was undertaken on land east of Tower Street to establish the survival and character of elements of the post-medieval defences of Hull, dated to c. 1541-1865. The ramparts of the north bastion of the Citadel were partially sectioned in two places. A distinction was defined between casually heaped and well-compacted clays forming the body of the main rampart of 1681-4, which represented poor and appropriate earthwork techniques respectively. The subsequent repair, and recutting of the Citadel moat, were also identified, dated to between 1745 and 1815. The excavations helped to restate the importance of the remains on the site and prompted further investigative work. [Au(adp)] |
