Abstract: |
The desk based assessment established that only a very small area of the Island site was land before 1794. Before that date it was mainly marsh protected from the Orwell by a marsh wall. From this date the site underwent a series of development including a few cottages, a boat yard, and a mill. The mill pond was filled completely by 1923 when the wharf frontage was extended. The only remaining structure on the north side of the old lock was the Harbour Masters office. In 1901 a new quay was constructed and the land raised to a uniform height. [Au(abr)] |
