Abstract:
A small-scale investigation of the drainage and waste system of a Georgian townhouse at 68 Dean Street was undertaken during exploratory works by non-archaeological contrators. The initial exploratory phase was undertaken to assess the extent and degree of survival of archaeological features within the brick street vault at the front of the house. The drainage features consisted of a domed circular brick-lined pit into which two drain chutes emptied. The pit was interpreted as a cess pit although it contained no clear usage fill, suggesting that it had been cleaned out by nightmen. The cess pit, situated within the street vault was likely to have been for the use of the servants. Another cess pit was previously recorded within the house under a ground level privy and would have been for the use of the main resident. Over one of the drain chutes, a hole in the vault roof to the pavement above suggested that water from the street may also have drained into the pit which perhaps also acted as a soakaway from cleansing the street. Although only part of the cess pit survived (the remainder having been cut away by a Victorian service trench), a drain was also recorded which could have functioned as an outlet taking liquids to the street sewer. At a later date the cess pit was rebuilt and further walls were inserted which were interpreted as part of a privy superstructure above it. The inclusion of yellow stock bricks in the rebuild might have indicated that this event took place in the early 19th century. [Au(adp)]
