Abstract: |
An evaluation and a buildings survey were carried out at a proposed development site. Part of the site lay within the historic planned town of Walsall, and part was occupied by the terminus of a 1799 branch of the former Birmingham Canal Network. During the evaluation, the remains of a late 19th century tannery building, demolished in the 1960s, were recorded. Rubbish pits, cellars and a brick culvert were observed, and 18th-19th century garden soils with residual medieval pottery were noted. A late-Victorian boundary wall and a second wall which may have been a boundary between two wharves were observed. Fourteen standing buildings were surveyed, including a 1930s cinema, commercial/residential premises and a wharfside warehouse. [AIP] |
