Abstract: |
A watching brief and archaeological recording were undertaken at the site of an ice house which was a Grade II Listed Building of probable late 18th century date. Consolidation works had necessitated the removal of part of the structure's covering earthern mound, and the excavation of two trial pits. The pits had revealed hitherto unrecorded brickwork, mortar and a stone block. The bricks and mortar, recorded at the ends of the two entranceway walls, were interpreted as a continuation of the wall footings, which had been truncated. The stone block had no obvious function, and may not have formed part of the original structure. A brick surface was also recorded, and was interpreted as the original pathway to the ice house.
