Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken, comprising 11 trenches. Trenches 1 and 2 were opened up at the north of the site and revealed extensive modern disturbance caused by quarrying. A further two trenches were situated at the south of the site. Of these, trench 6, to the east, revealed the presence of alluvial silty clay 1.75m below ground surface. Trench 8, to the west, however, revealed modern deposits to the limit of excavation at 2.5m depth. A further seven test pits were excavated to ascertain the full extent of the modern quarrying. Trenches 9-11 at the east of the site revealed modern deposits to the limit of excavation at 2.5m depth. Trenches 3 and 4 revealed alluvium at 1.7m depth to the limit of excavation at 2.5m depth. Trenches 5 and 7 revealed alluvium sloping from west to east and therefore probably indicated the line of modern quarrying truncation. All trenches and test pits excavated revealed refuse dumping and ground make-up deposits immediately below the top soil to a depth of c.1.7m where alluvium was present and to full excavation depth where it was not.
