Abstract:
A limited archaeological excavation was carried out in advance of an extension to the rear of 103-105 High Street. The excavation was confined to the footprint of the foundations and the service trenches, with the principal aim of determining the extent, state of survival and character of any archaeological features. Several Roman features were identified, a large pit, two ditches, a gully, three post holes and a 'midden' spread. The character of these features was similar to what would be expected in urban backyards, rubbish deposition and minor structures. These were all sealed by a layer of cultivated soil, which yielded a moderate amount of Roman artefacts mixed with a little medieval. Above this were a series of post-medieval levelling deposits, pits or post holes and one well. This suggested intensive occupation in the Roman period, followed by a period of agricultural activity until the post-medieval period. [Au(abr)]
