Abstract: |
An assessment of Garth Cottage, which forms the central of three divisions of the former west range of Coverham Abbey (a Premonstratensian house established 1212-1213), was undertaken prior to proposed renovation works. Inspection of the exposed fabric of the internal walls of Garth Cottage was insufficient to reconstruct the structural history of this part of the range, and although it was fairly clear that all of the internal walls predated the most recent remodelling in the late 19th or earlier twentieth century (probably being of post-medieval date), the remodelling had still had a signifcant impact on the interior of the range. Recording in the southern part of the range mainly identified elements of 17th through to 19th century date, although the structural fabric of the internal east wall of the entrance lobby was of quite different character to other parts of range, and may have related to te earlier medieval work pre-dating the early 16th-century reconstruction.
