Abstract: |
The assessment revealed that there were no previous archaeological remains across the site, however the village of Abbotts Langley had been referred to in documents dating to the late Saxon period and was recorded in the Domesday Book. The site lay between a medieval manor house and the St. Lawrence church. Several local historians had mentioned the construction of a grange on or close to Abbot's House in the late 14th/early 15th century, though whether this was reliable was open to interpretation. The report concluded that the cartographic evidence indicated that, for the medieval period, the most that might be expected would be the presence of rubbish or latrine pits and/or abandoned well shafts. However, there was the possibility that there may have been early medieval, Roman or prehistoric occupation in the vicinity. [Au(adp)] |
