Abstract: |
The proposal entailed the excavation of trenches in preparation for the construction of new foundations for the southward extension of the south wall of No. 2 Palace Place. The development lay within the area of the Bishop's Palace, interpreted as lying within the outer court and being the probable site of the Great Stable. This was a highly sensitive site, and all deposits below the concrete slab of the yard, which occupied the area of the proposed groundworks should be dug archaeologically. During the site visit the point was made that it may prove necessary to lay a concrete slab within the ground floor rooms of No. 3. This point was not covered by the current proposals but, were it to be carried out, would also impact on archaeological deposits and any deposits removed should be excavated archaeologically.
