Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed residential development of the site. Recording of 18th century dockyard wall fragments, including the gateway to the Converters' Pound was carried out concurrently with the evaluation. No significant pre-dockyard archaeological features were found. The only features identified comprised a large chalk pit recorded on 18th century maps, a post hole associated with a timber storage shed built between 1817 and 1843, foundations and surfaces associated with post-Second World War dockyard buildings, and modern service trenches.
