Abstract: |
The assessment considered that the present parkland may have contained buried physical evidence for these and later documented garden designs. Nothing was recorded archaeologically for the site prior to the 18th century. The general surrounding area had produced archaeological remains and finds from a wide range of periods, progressing in date from the Mesolithic through to the post-medieval period. It was presumed that the site itself was, like so much of the land to the north of Kensington Palace, affected by gravel extraction prior to the 18th century, which would have removed any possible earlier archaeological remains. The principal destructive affects to the earlier garden landscapes had occurred in the 20th century, with the construction of the Children's Playground and a World War II air raid shelter.
