Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for redevelopment and reclamation was undertaken. The survey area was made up of four plots, with Plot 1 covering an industrial complex which included the former late 19th century Ferrymoor and Grimethorpe collieries, a power station, a pulverisation plant, a coalite and chemical works and associated spoil tips. Plots 2 and 4 had lain within open agricultural land, but had been developed for housing for the collieries. Plot 3 had been occupied by a farm. All of the buildings within the former colliery complex in Plot 1 had been demolished, although the brickworks was still in production. The spoil heaps had been reclaimed, and very few identifiable features remained on site, although some concrete bases, roadways and dry reservoirs and settling ponds survived. Within the three smaller plots, all buildings had been demolished and the areas levelled. [AIP] |
