Abstract: |
A desk-top study of a proposed redevelopment site was undertaken. Bronze Age pottery had been recorded nearby, and Roman remains were known in the surrounding area. Excavation on part of the site in 1915 had revealed Roman quarries. The site lay on the edge of the precincts of an early medieval monastery. It was concluded that archaeological remains would have been truncated by 20th century basements, but that deep features could have survived. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out, followed by a watching brief. [AIP] |
