Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out during the excavation of geotechnical test-pits at a proposed development site. Roman remains in the vicinity included ditches, buildings, and the city wall, forum and basilica. An early medieval double inhumation had been found nearby, and a medieval church had lain on the site. During the evaluation, a foundation which may have represented the north wall of the church was revealed. An early Roman surface, pottery and the probable fill of a medieval rubbish pit were recorded. Post-medieval cellar walls, culverts and clay pipe fragments were found. It was concluded that further evaluation would be necessary. [AIP] |
