Abstract:
A desk-based study of proposed extensive mixed development along Bristol harbourside was undertaken. The area sat astride the Floating Harbour, formerly the course of the River Avon. Immediately outside the area to the north lay the major religious house of St Augustine's Abbey (now Bristol Cathedral), founded in 1140, but possibly on or near the site of earlier (late Saxon) activity. Canon's Marsh was in use in the medieval period as hay meadow, and there may have been one or two minor structures associated with the Abbey. Shipbuilding appeared to have been practised at Addercliff and the west bank of St Augustine's Reach from at least the late 17th century. A dock was probably built at the bottom of Woodwell Stream, in Clifton parish to the west of Canon's Marsh, in the early 17th century. Later in the century, a glasshouse was established nearby and during th 18th and 19th centuries development expanded across Canon's Marsh. Development of deep-water quays took place in the later 19th century. Hillhouse's dockyard provided the focus for activity at the western end of the area south of the harbour from 1820, while development moved westward from Wapping. Considerable change had taken place in the harbourside area since the Second World War, particularly with the closure of the City Docks to commercial shipping. [Au]
