Abstract: |
Flat ledger slabs commemorating Thomas and Isabella Bewick lay immediately to the west of the tower of St Mary's Church, alongside the flagged path adjacent to the building. These slabs were being lifted and re-set at a slightly higher level. The slab to Thomas Bewick measured 2.07 by 1.0m; it was 0.10m in thickness, and was now cracked into two pieces; it bore no decoration or inscription other than the name 'Thomas Bewick' at the top (west) end. Isabella Bewick's slab lay alongside on the south, and was very similar, although only 0.90m wide; it was unbroken. The outer edges of both slabs had a narrow concave moulding, but their contiguous edges were left square. When the slabs were lifted it was found that they were resting on a cavity, presumably the family vault, infilled with dark soil. The tops of the side walls of the vault were exposed on the west and south. The south wall was partly of brick, and the west wall capped by Welsh slates, above thin flagstone slabs. Isabella died in 1826 and Thomas in 1828; their graves were formerly surrounded by 'iron palisades' (Tomlinson W.W. Comprehensive Guide to the County of Northumberland, 1912, 98). The use of Welsh slate, brought into the area with the railways c1840 or later, suggested that there had been some reconstruction and alteration, probably when the vault was infilled. [Au(adp)] |
