Abstract: |
Twelve prospection pits were machine excavated to a depth of circa 5 metres. These established the western edge of a sand island identified at Fort Street lying to the eastern side of the Barnwood Court site, which was then examined by the excavation of an evaluation trench. A second evaluation trench was excavated in the northeast corner of the site. Fragments of burnt flint and flint debitage were recovered from within the sand horizon on one of the eastern prospection pits. Subsequent examination of the deposit within the trench at that location failed to recover any prehistoric deposits or any further anthropogenic material. The sand deposit was shown to have been sealed by peat deposits dating from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. In turn, peat was sealed by marine transgression clay-silt alluvium dating from the Iron Age up until the 19th century. [Au] |
