Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, which lay within the ancient village of Fiddington. A 14th century cross lay within the grounds of the nearby Church of St Mary's, which was of late medieval date but which probably occupied the site of an earlier building. During the evaluation, two medieval ditches containing four sherds of medieval pottery and a piece of fired clay were recorded. Two undated pits and a post-medieval ditch containing three pieces of ceramic building material were also revealed. It was concluded that the investigation had produced the first excavated evidence for medieval Fiddington, and that the absence of structural features and the relatively small number of artefacts suggested that the features had lain on the fringes of the early settlement.
