Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken in advance of building works. Two trenches were excavated to a depth of 1.4m. Trench 1 revealed two features relating to previous use of the site: an early-19th century soakaway and a late 19th century basement. Finds from the fill of the soakaway included bottles, ceramics and clay pipes that had been dated c.1830-1850. The basement was constructed of orangey/yellow frogged brick and had remnants of decayed wallpaper and plaster, but no architectural features. It was thought that the soakaway was backfilled during the construction of the later basement. Trench 2 revealed no features. The stratigraphy of this trench was natural orange gravel, overlain by weathered natural. Above this was soft silt layer - thought to have been a former garden soil. Whilst there was a likelihood of encountering further backfilled, late 19th century basements on the site, these were unlikely to have offered further insight to the history of the development on this site. The site, whilst not providing evidence of the early history of Clapham had provided the opportunity to examine a small domestic assemblage from Clapham in the mid-19th century. [Au(abr)] |
