Abstract:
A second phase of study of Grim's Ditch, a series of linear earthworks that ran through Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Oxfordshire, was undertaken for the Chilterns Countryside Service. The study related to those lengths in Buckinghamshire and some of those in Hertfordshire. The study consisted of cartographic and aerial photographic research, as well as field reconnaissance, and geophysical and topographical survey. Cartographic and aerial photographic research lead to the plotting of several new lengths of Grim's Ditch that were not found in the first phase of work. A minor amendment to the course of the monument was made. Ground reconnaissance in four places found a new length of earthwork which may have been part of the Grim's Ditch system, but it was impossible to be certain of this without further fiieldwork. Geophysical survey, including magnetometer survey and more limited resistivity trial survey, took place at four places along Grim's Ditch. The surveys produced positive results from two areas. At X1 there was evidence for limited continuation of the monument, at the south end of the survey area. At M1, the earthwork appeared to have to have moved position slightly, and was less substantial now than it was originally. Topographical survey accurately located the Steps Hill earthworks which had not previously been plotted, and positively identified the route of the monument through Widmoor Wood. Now that these lengths are accurately recorded thaere is the potential for future quantiative study of damage and erosion to the earthwork in two very different environments. [Au(adp)]
