Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during remediation and demolition works of the development site. A large number of structures were observed during the watching brief and, where possible, located to the OS map. Structural remains to the north and west of the Portwall seen during the watching brief were largely of 18th and 19th century construction and were associated with both domestic and industrial processes taking place across the site from the 13th century to the present day. Known features of archaeological significance in the Temple Quay area included the medieval Portwall, industrial premises formerly located on Temple Back and Pipe Lane, a 19th century malthouse, the Jewish burial ground, oil and tallow works, a ropewalk, and the covered goods yard adjacent to Temple Meads Railway Station with its associated barge dock. The most recent archaeological remains encountered during the watching brief were the 'Bristol Clay Tobacco Manufacturers Ltd' factory kiln, operational from 1904-1911 which was excavated and planned in detail.
