Abstract: |
<summary>Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for a quarry extension established that the proposed development area contained a number of known archaeological sites, including: areas of irregular pits and trenches associated with early open cast iron ore mining; buildings associated with the post-medieval and modern Robin Hood Mine; an area of low mounds interpreted as mounds of partly smelted slag (although due to their proximity to the Long Stone, a monolith of probable Bronze Age date, there is a possibility that they may have been Bronze Age burial mounds); a slight hollow way; a field named "Windmille Field"; and areas containing miscellaneous evidence of iron ore extraction and smelting. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} GLOS13920 |
