Abstract: |
Thurland Castle was a late medieval manor house that had undergone successive periods of destruction, restoration and rebuilding to attain its present appearance of an 18th/19th-century mansion. A series of potential archaeological features, including evidence of ridge and furrow ploughing and possible 17th century siegeworks needed investigation. Four trenches were excavated, but no significant archaeological features were noted, apart from a small pit of probable modern date in Trench 3 and a field drain in Trench 1. The trench within the area of the gas tanks yielded only features related to the castle gardens, namely a tree-bole and a possible hedge-line. A watching brief was also undertaken, which revealed no archaeological features. [Au(abr)] |
