Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken of the 3ha site prior to the proposed development of the campus. A gazetteer listing 22 sites of archaeological interest in the study area was compiled; a small number of sites of medieval or early post-medieval date were identified, though the majority were of later post-medieval or modern date. A small portion of land at the northern end of the proposed development area was not sited on land reclaimed during the 19th century. Aside from the site of a medieval or early post-medieval jetty, part of which may have survived south of Wellington Street, this was the only area which had any potential for the survival of significant archaeological remains. Traces may have remained of the early Humber shore, which was protected from flooding by artificially raised banks. These may have been surmounted by a road leading to the jetty, running from the Hessle Gate, the south-westernmost gate into the medieval town of Hull, and there was some potential for the survival of occupation alongside this. There was also a possibility that elements of the Civil War defence works may lie within the site. The large part of the gazetteer concerned sites of a more recent date, principally reflecting the development and subsequent decline of the dock facilities and infrastructure between the early 19th century and the 20th century. Contemporary maps and plans were used selectively to chart the processes that had resulted in the current site topography. Dilapidated timber structures along the southern edge of the proposal area were examined during a walkover survey, and following examination of maps and aerial photographs, were considered to be of 20th century date.
