Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that two domestic wells and a well for industrial use lay within the southern part of it. The first five courses of one of the wells consisted of medieval bricks, which had probably been re-used from elsewhere within the town. An associated rubbish pit had contained waterlogged material, with well-preserved leather dating to the late 18th century. The SMR contained several references to prehistoric activity in the surrounding area, ranging from finds of Upper Palaeolithic handaxes during the construction of a road to finds of Bronze Age and Iron Age material in and around Fareham. Evidence of Mesolithic activity had also been recovered, and Roman, Saxon and medieval evidence had been found to the north-north-west of the site. Numerous Listed Buildings lay within Fareham town centre, the majority of which were of 17th, 18th and 19th century date. Earlier structures had been noted along the High Street, at Westbury Manor and along West Street. It was recommended that an evaluation by geophysical survey and trial trenching should be carried out. [Au(adp)]
