Abstract: |
A desk top assessment of a proposed development site, which was partly overlain by the eastern defences of a complex of Roman forts, was undertaken. Post- medieval pottery, brick and tile fragments and a scatter of heat-shattered quartz pebbles had been noted during a walkover survey of the site. The latter may have indicated the proximity of a prehistoric burnt mound; several of these had been recorded to the west, and three Neolithic flints had been recovered during previous excavations at the forts. A programme of fieldwalking, geophysical survey and trial trenching was proposed. [AIP] |
