Abstract: |
Three trial trenches were excavated as an evaluation. Two of these revealed 19th/20th century railway cuttings and associated features, which had truncated any possible earlier features. The third trench, revealed a sequence of plough-soils sealing a number of post-holes, pits and ditches, of presumed pre-historic date. Three test pits were dug through the natural brickearth into the terrace gravels. The excavation phase revealed the foundations and platforms of the 19th and 20th century railway terminus, the position of a number of tracks, and associated features such as the turntable. pre-historic features (at the time of writing attributed to the Late Bronze Age) had survived in the northwest corner of the site, beneath the platform on the eastern margin, and in places beneath the station to the north. These features consisted of scatterings of post holes and pits, with one large boundary ditch bisecting the site. Two areas were suggestive of post ring structures, and there were remnants of at least four ring ditches/gullies. An as yet undated human cremation within a possible wooden vessel, was also found.
