Abstract: |
A magnetometer and magnetic susceptability survey was undertaken across the site of a proposed new sports hall for the Knights Templar School. The survey detected two ditch-like linear features, one of which was comparatively well-defined, and the other irregular or eroded. Either or both may have been modern, but the possibility that they may be archaeologically significant could not be excluded on the survey evidence alone. The survey produced a relatively high level of background noise probably indicating the presence of iron and other magnetic material of modern origin in the topsoil, perhaps together with naturally magnetic stones in the boulder clay subsoil. It was not impossible that magnetic anomalies representing small pits or postholes could have been present, but the random distribution of the magnetic activity, and lack of any larger features of archaeological significance (other than the 2 possible ditches), suggested this was unlikely.
