Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at a development site which lay adjacent to an Iron Age hillfort which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Previous evaluation of the site had revealed a pit or ditch and several possible post holes. During the excavation, the pit/ditch feature was found to represent the edge of a medium-sized ditch, containing a flint flake and five sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery. The post holes previously observed were found to have been the ends of undated strip marks, possibly caused by ploughing. It was concluded that the ditch may have been the remnant of a hilltop enclosure, perhaps a precursor to the hillfort. [AIP] |
