Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the relaying of the floors at the church. Beneath the existing flooring within the chancel, nave and aisles were a number of brick sleeper walls, with pit shape filling the voids between them. The exposed floor levels were cleaned to reveal deposits of natural clay and sandstone cut by several undated features, including 15 gravecuts. Visible along the line of both arcades were the truncated remains of the north and south nave wall foundations. The remains of a further stone foundation at the east end of the south aisle were thought to have been part of a former chantry chapel alter, cut on its north side by two early post-medieval infant burials. The existing rebuilt south aisle appeared to have been erected upon the stone foundations of the original medieval aisle. In contrast the foundations of the northern aisle added in 1842, were largely constructed of brick, with the exception of the west wall and north arcade pier which contained several re-used (including moulded) stones. A possible stone slab path found in the north aisle appeared to indicate the site of a former north doorway for the nave. Re-flooring exposed the entrance to the Willoughby vault under the sanctuary. Inspection revealed five lead and three stone coffins inside, with several skulls and disarticulated bone scattered in between. A number of these coffins were identified, including that of George Willoughby, founder of the Cossall Almhouses; who also appeared to be responsible for the construction of the Willoughby vault in 1680.
