Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed new harbour installation that would have potential affects on the land in the surrounding coastal zone. The report covered a wide area of interest up to 12miles out to sea in order to gain a comprehensive record of sites of archaeological potential. A gazetteer listing the sites within the area identified by the SMR was compiled and the results of this search are shown in Appendix 1. Information about vessel remains and shipping losses was provided by the RCHME and checked against information from Admiralty Maps in the publication Shipwrecks of the Yorkshire Coast (Godfrey & Lassey, 1989). The archaeology along this coastal stretch was particularly varied and rich, and included land-based sites, some of which area threatened by erosion, inter-tidal archaeological and marine archaeology, and sites permanently covered by water. The categories of site type were particularly varied, with the potential for palaeoenvironmental sites such as submerged forests or land surfaces, the historic management of early sea and flood defences, coastal trade and transport. This class of evidence included ports, harbours and vessel remains), coastal industry, the exploitation of marine resources, and major port and harbour installations. [Au(abr)]
