Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed lowering of the basements. A major part of the research was to locate information concerning the setting of the site in relation to the Mid Saxon settlement of London or 'The Strand Settlement'. The data showed the site to be located in an area now known to be the centre of the mid-Saxon and possibly early Saxon occupation. Since then the site had had a long and varied history with significant post-medieval remains. The excavation of four trial pits and one heading showed no archaeological soil formations, and features older than the 19th century. [Au(abr)] |
