Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the residential redevelopment of the site. The watching brief recorded a row of adjoining infilled cellars along the Wilson Street frontage, boundary walls and a buried soil horizon representing garden remains to the rear, and further segments of the slum dwelling property boundary observed during the field evaluation. The structural evidence suggested that the houses fronting Wilson Street were built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, undergoing alterations in the later 19th and 20th centuries. Several of the cellars were partitioned, some had underfloor cess pits and nearly all were accessed from the street by coal chutes. The slum dwelling wall appeared to have been of similar date to the street frontages. Two stone wells, possibly predating the houses, were also recorded. [Au(abr)] |
