Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it had lain just outside the main built up area of 1st and 2nd century AD Roman London, on the north side of the defensive ditch which had lain in front of the Roman city wall. Sites in the vicinity had produced evidence of Roman quarrying for brickearth and gravel, rubbish disposal from the Roman settlement just to the south, and remains of the wall itself and the defensive ditch. 3rd and 4th century AD burials had also been excavated; the site lay in the south-east corner of the Roman cemetery. The Roman ditch had been recut in the early 13th century, and medieval tenements and workshops had lain in the area. It was concluded that archaeological evidence relating to early Roman quarrying, the Roman cemetery and medieval buildings was likely to be present at the proposal site. The proposed development would have a direct impact on potential archaeological deposits in two areas of the site, although much of the site had no potential for archaeological survival, due to deep truncation by the present building. A supplement to the assessment report was produced later in 1997, following the acquisition of an additonal property by the client with a view to including it in the redevelopment proposal. The area beneath the new property, 110 Houndsditch, was considered to be of low archaeological potential, as the current basement would have truncated any deposits to a level below the original ground surface. However, it was noted that deep cut features could have survived which would be affected by the proposals. [AIP]
