Abstract:
An archaeological field evaluation, consisting of the excavation of three test pits, was undertaken. The earliest deposits, which were only exposed at the base of test pits 1 and 2, comprised natural sandy silt-clay (brickearth). Various masonry features of post-medieval date were recorded in the northern sides of test pits 1 and 2. These were likely to have represented the remains of buildings, including Alms Houses known from cartographic evidence to have been located on the site from at least the early 19th century until their demolition in the 20th century. Truncating the masonry features in test pits 1 and 2 was a large service pipe trench aligned E-W and running through much of the site. Any archaeological features within test pit 3 had been totally truncated by a modern feature which continued below the limits of excavation. In conclusion, archaeological survival was limited to a very thin strip located along the western and central part of the northern perimeter of the site. [Au(abr)]
