Abstract:
An evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of a replacement main between Newton and Wynhill pumping stations, in an area immediately to the south-west of Margidunum, a Roman small town.Fieldwalking recovered a thin scatter of finds of prehistoric, Romano-British, medieval and post-medieval date from within 100m of the strip adajcent to the Fosse Way. Test-pitting revealed modern ploughsoil above up to 0.7 metres of silty clay and recovered a small quantitiy of Romano-British pottery and post-medieval pottery, brick, clay pipe, ironwork and clinker. Trenching identified no trace of Roman road levels on either side of the modern carriageway of the Fosse Way. However north-east to south-west gullies were recorded which may have represented a long-lived Romano-British boundary running parallel to the Roman Fosse Way. [AIP]
