Abstract: |
The landscape in which the study area lies contained a large number of sites from a wide range of archaeological periods. At least 52 known sites of archaeological potential were contained within the study area. A possible prehistoric enclosure and associated field system was identified within the study area. The settlement sites within the study area were predominantly medieval in origin. The present landscape retained some medieval features, principally in the form of boundaries. However, the former medieval strip fields within the study area have been largely removed by 19th -20th century agricultural improvements. Industrial activity was also present within the site, characterised by the presence of quarries and limekilns exploiting the doleritic limestone.[Au(abr)] |
