Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment and evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposals to construct two dwellings. Little Shelford had produced evidence dating back to the Neolithic period, although it was probably not occupied on a permanent basis until the Anglo-Saxon period. The village had since expanded from its original location at the river crossing, but still remained small and rural in character. The assessment site was situated to the immediate west of the railway and was likely to have contained the remains of the original railway buildings that were built during the 19th century. Prior to the coming of the railway and subsequent 20th century horticultural developments, this area was in agricultural use, and was probably largely undisturbed. Archaeological finds and cropmarks were known from close to the site, confirming that the area had a high archaeological potential, though no remains were known within the site itself. Field evaluation confirmed the presence of substantial 20th century ground disturbance (particularly from horticultural use and the insertion of many services). A number of modern features were recorded, in addition to two undated ditches. No residual finds of any pre-modern periods were made. [Au(abr)]
