Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment demonstrated that the study corridor contained 158 known or likely archaeological sites and that the proposed pipeline would directly affect 27 sites of likely archaeological interest. These included: a possible Roman road; the possible below ground remains of an extensive prehistoric or Roman field system; two areas of lynchets, of probable post-medieval date and the vestigial remains of the World War II airfield at Hampstead Norreys. The pipeline route would also pass through the centre of an airfield and would sever three farm tracks and an area of woodland, all of which followed the line of the 1940's runways. Cropmark and earthwork features of uncertain date and significance would also be affected, as well as the line of a substantial ditch, which was badly damaged, but was possibly a substantial prehistoric linear earthwork. There was a strong possibility that more sites would be present. [Au(adp)] |
