Abstract: |
A photographic survey of a number of industrial archaeological sites to the north-west of Nenthead village was undertaken. The sites had been highlighted in an earlier survey which had assessed the implications of proposed engineering works associated with the stabilisation of three tailings dams, the control and partial canalisation of the River Nent, and other environmental improvements. A total of thirteen sites of archaeological interest, most of which were associated with various phases of industrial activity, were identified within the study area. As well as the three large tailings dams, which had been constructed in the 1940s from re-processed waste material, the sites included the portal of the Bloomsbury Level, two sections of a former tramway, the site of the Wellgill Shaft, a footbridge, and several eroding river revetments. Although the majority of the structures associated with the Brownley Hill dressing floor and the Wellgill Spelter (zinc processing) Works and dressing floor had been destroyed, a number of peripheral features associated with water control systems, tramways and spoil heaps were identified.
