Abstract: |
A desk top assessment of a proposed development site which may have occupied a corner of an insula of Corinium, Roman Cirencester, was undertaken. It may also have lain within the outer bailey of a medieval castle. Watching briefs during previous development at the site had recorded possible evidence of Roman gravel quarrying, sealed by a layer of silts which could not be differentiated but which may have represented successive Roman timber building phases. Stone walls and floors of Roman buildings, medieval pits and post-medieval features were also observed. It was concluded that a watching brief and salvage excavation could be appropriate for the upper levels at the site, but that the lower, Roman, levels merited preservation in situ or by record.
