Abstract: |
Due to the proximity of the development site to the core of the medieval town of Reigate (a Conservation Area) and the Scheduled Reigate Castle (SAM No. Surrey 61), it was considered that the development site may have been used in the medieval period, leaving contemporary remains beneath the existing buildings. The evidence recovered seemed to suggest that the site was not built on until after 1920, remaining a field until that time. It is unusual for this type of open area to have remained untouched for so long so close to a medieval town and its castle, but this can be explained by the 18th century creation of a gentleman's estate known as Reigate Lodge which blocked suburban expansion to the east of the castle. It was however, considered possible that the moat of the castle might cross the western edge of the development site. [Au(abr)] |
