Abstract:
In the course of a watching brief at Roche Abbey House, natural deposits were encountered c.1m below ground. A small section of the base of a limestone wall was revealed and was left in situ. It was interpreted as part of an earlier building occupying the site of Roche Abbey House and was likely to have dated from some point in the post-medieval period before the late 18th century, although a medieval date could not be ruled out. A build up of material contemporary with the use of the wall/building was recorded. All other excavated deposits were of post-medieval date and primarily represented post-medieval demolition derived rubble above which was a surface of limestone chippings which had been sealed by modern topsoil. The installation of a staircase at the rear of Abbey House required the removal of c.0.40m depth of material. This was observed to comprise modern concrete and levelling and to have no archaeological significance so its removal was not monitored. The site of a demolished outhouse, which may have housed a boiler, was noted to the rear of the house and this was not considered to have had any particular archaeological significance. [Au(abr)]
