Abstract: |
<summary>An excavation was carried out to the south of the covered market building, prior to the construction of a market rubbish compactor. All excavated features could be dated to the Middle Saxon (650-850 AD) period, and were probably associated with the settlement of {italon}Hamwic{italoff}. A shallow linear feature which had been re-cut on one occasion was excavated. There were also three rubbish pits and a possible post hole. A large quantity of ironworking debris was excavated, consisting of smithing slag and hearth linings. Part of a ceramic vessel that had been used for melting glass was recovered. The Middle Saxon deposits were sealed by a 0.5m thick agricultural soil. {italon}Sec(abr)(4c){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} SOU 514 (Southampton City Council, Heritage Management investigation identification no) |
